Who Made My Blanket: A visit to the mill in Lithuania with our auditor

Do you know who makes the things that you wear and use every day? After the fatal collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh in 2013, a global movement was sparked... Fashion Revolution demands transparency and fairness in the fashion industry. This week is Fashion Revolution Week 2020 and there's never a better time to ask – who made my blanket? Well most of our blankets are manufactured at Australia’s oldest wool mill in Tasmania. And in 2019 we introduced our first internationally-manufactured blanket, the Seljak Dune. The Seljak Dune blanket is made with reclaimed textile waste in Kaunas, Lithuania, combining factory floor offcuts of 16 mills around Europe. The Lithuanian mill is 93 years old with Italian...

Turning old woollen jumpers into new yarn

In late 2019, Seljak Brand’s co-founder Sammy visited one of the textiles recycling hot-spots in the world. A small town in Italy is host to some of Europe’s most established textiles recycling facilities, many of which are almost a century old.  The region works as a network. One of the incredibly inspiring businesses we visited was a vertically integrated recycled textiles mill – a fourth generation family business – now managed by a brother and sister. This...

Art as action: Finding the role of creativity in the face of a climate crisis

The climate crisis is pressing and communities are only becoming more impacted as we feel the effects of global warming. Most climate action focuses on emissions reduction through renewable energy and reforestation, which is difficult for many of us to engage with on the every day and leaves the skills and passions of creative people by the wayside in the call for climate action. It also largely ignores how we are to prepare for the extreme natural events to which we’re increasingly exposed. Art and creativity critiques and envisions, it builds new, re-invents and inspires – all essential components of transitioning to new ways of doing things. Furthermore, storytelling creates connection between people and groups which is core to effective action....
